Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 involves the in-depth decarbonisation of the energy system
The electrification of the system needs to be intensified and decarbonised fuels need to be adopted in those processes in which electrification is not possible. This is an unprecedented challenge that requires the mass incorporation of renewable energy, the intensification of energy efficiency in buildings, cities and industry, electrification of transport, replacement of fossil fuels with green energy carriers and the deployment of smart grids to facilitate advanced management of energy generation, storage and distribution.
Investment in R&D and Innovation is extremely important as the implementation of most of the solutions in order to address this challenge requires advanced scientific and technological developments. For this purpose, the Elkartek research grant programme seeks to promote collaborative research projects between agents of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network (RVCTI).
Strategic priorities of the Basque Country’s Science, Technology and Innovation Plan 2030
