Digitalisation drives the electrification of the energy system, the extensive introduction of renewable energy and the decarbonisation of the economy.

This webinar is presented within the framework of the series of webinars organised by IEEE PES Spain under the theme of Energy Transition towards a "Decarbonised Economy".

Our experts in digitalisation for the energy sector, Erik Maqueda and Eugenio Perea, will introduce us to the principles of data space design.

  • They will analyse some of the current specificities within the energy sector, in general, and within electrical grids and renewable energy, in particular.
  • More specifically, a case study of offshore wind power and the design of a data space based on a benchmark architecture by IDS (International Data Space Association) will be analysed.

Digitalisation and smart grids

Digitalisation is a virtually essential tool to manage the growing number of renewable energy sources, the uncertainties of renewable primary resources and the bidirectionality of energy flows as well as the need to provide access to information to end-users, among many other aspects.

  • Digitalisation is enabling the emergence of new business models: ESEs; aggregators and demand side management; energy communities and energy self-consumption; aggregation of electrical vehicle charging or equipment manufacturers that are also selling software as new products that can be maintained and updated.
  • Smart grids are starting to focus on data. Public services companies, owners of renewable energy plants and energy retailers are starting to have data spaces, and the extraction of knowledge from this data is becoming possible thanks to Artificial Intelligence.

New services and business models are arising around data and data managers, rendering it essential to have policies and technologies in place that can ensure the sovereignty of and the governance of the data, while determining who is the owner of the data, who it’s shared with, for what purpose and under what conditions.
