Metallography is the study of the microstructure of material alloys, which is tightly related to the mechanical and chemical properties and their thermo-mechanical history.

What information can we get from a metallographic characterisation?

  • Spot defects (porosity, cracks, shrink holes, macroinclusions, etc.) caused by possible faults in the material, the process, etc.
  • Information about the thermal treatment, as well as about the manufacturing process of the part, in order to check whether it has been carried out correctly.
  • Coating analysis to ensure adequate protection.
  • Completion of the part quality control. This is usually carried out by means of standardised mechanical tests and chemical analyses in accordance with international standards (counting non-metal inclusions, determination of the grain size, etc.) in order to confirm that the material is in good condition.
