FacadeReLog is an applied education project that trains professionals from the European façades industry on themes related to recovery and reuse of materials. The project is taking part in THE MISS Forum by organising three sessions which will work on various case studies,
Each session will consist of a brief presentation in the form of a theoretical overview with practical examples from other industries and ongoing projects. This will be followed by a workshop where attendees will be invited to share their experience, and talk about the obstacles for their day-to-day activities. Within the work groups, the workshops will aim to find possible answers or lines of development to apply circular economy principles to the façade industry.
Moderators
- Julen Astudillo Larraz: principal researcher for the TECNALIA Architectural Envelopes team
- Pablo Martín Hernanz: Director of ASEFAVE - Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Light Façades and Windows
- Ines Gómez Arroyo: ASEFAVE Technical department - Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Light Façades and Windows
- Juan Azcárate Aguerre and Tillmann Klein (TU Delft)
DAY 1
The first session will present the FacadeReLog project and its sustainability and circularity goals. Then the session will look at “Design and engineering of façade and construction products for a circular economy”; the technical aspects that must be taken into account to ease recovery and redistribution of products and raw materials, retaining as much value as possible.
- Speakers
- Dr. Ing. Tillmann Klein. Lecturer on innovation in construction products. TU Delft, NL
- Arch. Ir. Juan F. Azcarate-Aguerre. Researcher on business models for a circular economy. TU Delft, NL
The second session will focus on “Business models and value chain for the circular façade industry.” This session will discuss new forms of added value and economic incentives that might motivate companies in the construction sector. It will also explore new architectural envelopes from the circular economy. Furthermore, reverse logistics will be presented in greater detail. This refers to the process by which the raw materials can be recovered and turned into new products, maintaining the greatest possible value and reusing it in new circular business models.
- Speakers
- Dr. Karel van Acker. Lecturer on Processing and Recycling of Sustainable Materials. KU Leuven. BE
- Dr. Benny Tjahjono. Lecturer on Sustainability and Supply Chain Management. University of Coventry, UK
DAY 2
This session will focus on case studies to demonstrate corporate and social incentives, which can inspire companies and other key players during the transition to a circular economy. Decision-making and environmental impact assessment in selection and recovery of materials will be central themes at the event.
- Speakers
- Dr Ester van der Voet. Associate lecturer at the Environmental Sciences Institute Department of Industrial Ecology. University of Leiden, NL
- Dr Linda Hildebrand. Lecturer on Recyclable Construction. RWTH Aachen, DE
In the last session, we will discuss the results of the various workshops, and draw some conclusions for companies in the façade construction sector who wish to explore business models, and circular supply chains.
