Healthcare Robotics is highly regulated through policies, standards, and technical regulations. A large body of governmental standards and regulations needs to be followed, mainly around quality, safety, ethics and environmental issues.
However, these standards are no guarantee to facilitate economic growth, being market friendly and consumer driven. Voluntary standards and best practices as they have been developed in the ICT industry around interoperability, accessibility, security, and convergence can serve as an example how such standards and best practices can be open and customer oriented, promote market development and interoperability.
