A new tool will integrate storage and demand response in power grid planning

23 June 2020

The FlexPlan research initiative considers the incorporation of new flexibility resources in grid planning

Our experts are participating in the development of a preprocessing tool, which offers a reduced number of flexibility resource candidates, storage and demand response, as input for an innovative grid planning tool. The preprocessor also selects the most appropriate nodes of the grid for the installation or activation of flexible resources. All of this enables the inclusion of distributed energy technologies within the network planning process, going a step beyond conventional procedures.

FlexPlan considers the opportunity to introduce flexibility resources as an alternative to the construction of new grid elements, for example, transport lines, as the only option for grid expansion. Its feasibility will be demonstrated through six European regional case studies over the period 2030-2050. We are responsible for the Iberian Peninsula's case study.

The initiative also considers formulating guidelines for regulators and for the planning offices of Transmission and Distribution System Operators (TSO and DSO).
