“Formula Student Bizkaia presented the single-seater FSB2023 to compete once again in Formula Student competitions, at the Silverstone Circuit (FSUK) and Montmeló (FSS)”
Formula Student Bizkaia offers a “world of work” experience by means of a challenge: to build a single-seater racing car
Formula Student Bizkaia is a team made up of 60 students and 3 lecturers which aims to offer a “world of work” experience by means of a challenge: to build a single-seater racing car. Thanks to the project’s unique “Business at University” methodology, members are trained in technical aspects and also get the chance to learn cross-cutting skills such as teamwork, problem management and sustainability.
An electric single-seater designed by students
The FSB2023 that was presented is a prototype formula electric vehicle with a decoupled push-rod suspension. It features a revolutionary aerodynamic package tested using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation which allows the car to have a great cornering performance.
The all-wheel drive (AWD), with an engine on each wheel, means that the car’s traction can be optimally distributed in all conditions. All of this is powered by an innovative battery management system (up to 141.6 kW / 190 HP), allowing the lightweight (220 kg) single-seater to cover the 22 laps of the endurance racing circuit.
It has taken a whole academic year to design the FSB2023, in which the students have covered all the stages of an engineering project: design, manufacturing, assembly and, finally, track testing. The 60 students involved in the project have been organised according to the functional structure of a company.
TECNALIA has sponsored the team and advised them throughout the academic year
FSB2023 will compete against more than 100 universities from all over the world at the Formula Student competitions to be held this year at the Silverstone Circuit, 19-23 July, and Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, 6-12 August.
The new prototype aims to beat the great results of 2022 in competitions where the team managed to secure a place in the top 10 in several of the competition events. They managed to come fourth in the Design event, in which the jury takes into account the design of the single-seater and the knowledge of the team members to defend it.
And the team came sixth in the Cost and Sustainability test, in which they defended the economic management of the project, its manufacturing and sustainability. Finally, they won fourth place in the Business Model test, in which the team presented the viability of a company to commercialise their single-seater.
