TECNALIA is part of the Regions4Climate initiative to accelerate adaptation to climate change in 12 European regions
- The Basque technology centre is participating in the Regions4Climate initiative within the framework of the Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change, which contributes to the fulfilment of the European Green Deal.
- The Basque Country is one of three regional resilience demonstrators that will drive learning from other European regions.
- TECNALIA technically coordinates the vulnerability and risk analysis of all the project regions. It also guides one of the region clusters in its process of implementing, testing and replicating scalable, transferable and cost-effective solutions for integrated climate adaptation to improve regional resilience to the impacts of climate change.
3 March 2023. Adaptation to climate change has become one of Europe's main objectives for 2030. In the face of escalating climate change, the EU facilitates research and implementation of new social innovations at the local level to accelerate our resilience or ability to recover.
In this context, TECNALIA is participating in the Regions4Climate initiative within the framework of the European Commission's Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change, which is helping to fulfil the European Green Deal. The technology centre is therefore part of one of the first regional resilience demonstrators supported by this European Union flagship initiative.
The initiative involves 12 European regions in the development and testing of their own resilience plans and transformative adaptation pathways, enhanced by cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing. Among them is the Basque Country, which will act as a demonstrator that will drive learning from other European regions.
Restoration of Txingudi Bay
More specifically, the Basque pilot project revolves around the restoration of Txingudi Bay, led by the Basque Government's Directorate of Natural Heritage. It aims to increase the resilience of the coast to climate change events, with a strong component of governance and involvement of local agents. It also aims at transferability through the definition of an intervention framework based on spatial planning and urban development instruments.
TECNALIA is leading the climate risk analysis and will monitor the effectiveness of the measures implemented in the regions participating in the project. The technology centre will also contribute technically to the spatial and urban planning components, as well as to the early warning and coastal weather monitoring systems of the Basque demonstrator. Furthermore, through its role accompanying the regions, it will identify innovative, transferable and exemplary components, also supporting the Basque Region in the definition of its own Adaptation Mission.
The Basque representation on the Regions4Climate project consortium is headed by the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment and Ihobe - Public Society for Environmental Management of the Basque Government along with theTECNALIA, AZTI and Zabala technology centres, which will support other European regions from their extensive experience to understand the complexity of climate risks better and apply the lessons learned from other reference regions.
About Regions4Climate
The Regions4Climate initiative, coordinated by the VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland, brings together 44 partners from 13 different European countries to demonstrate innovations that improve society's resilience to the effects of climate change, in line with the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal.
Based on cross-sectoral strategies created by and for people, project partners will collaboratively develop and implement innovative social, technological, digital, business, governance and environmental solutions to strengthen adaptive capacity and minimise vulnerability to climate impacts. This project has received funding from the Horizon EU research and innovation program, in accordance with Subsidy Agreement No. 101093873.
