Decarbonisation, digitalisation and automation of urban transport with zero emission buses

Avanza, Zaragoza City Council five companies and three technology centres, including TECNALIA, are taking part in Digizity to automate, decarbonise and digitalise urban transport with zero-emission buses. Digizity is part of an integrated model aimed at creating zero-emissions cities through sustainable mobility.

We have presented its relevant environment: it consists of a ring-fenced and 100% secure research infrastructure in the framework of the PERTE Electric and Connected Vehicle. This test environment has been carried out on Zaragoza’s public transport line 40. The vehicle is already operational in its first stage; it will allow the testing and integration of all the systems developed in the project.

Project goals

The automated vehicle incorporates a driving aid, which helps to ensure safety: it does not replace the driver, but rather assists them in order to increase safety. It will help to reduce the number of accidents due to human error; tiredness, fatigue and speeding.

It will also improve mobility and accessibility in outlying neighbourhoods. The technology with which it is equipped will help to plan routes and timetables, reduce waiting times and optimising infrastructure. Automated driving will make a major contribution to environmental sustainability; it will enable the final leap towards electrification of the vehicle fleet and promote much more efficient resource management.

The development of the vehicle is expected to be replicable in other geographical areas, promoting national objectives such as decarbonisation, connectivity and automation of the vehicle fleet.
