Cultural and agricultural heritage of valencian orchards aims to increase resilience to climate change

27 April 2020

The ARCH initiative aims to create a framework to adapt to climate change and manage disaster risk in order to assess and boost the Orchards’ ability to recover

At the end of March and beginning of April we took part in a series of online meetings focused on the co-creation of tools that aim to protect the cultural and agricultural heritage of Valencia from the impact of climate change.

These meetings had two goals. The first was to present and develop the case study of the city of Valencia, in which aspects related to climate change, cultural heritage and the Albufera/Orchards region converge. The second consisted of aligning the needs and priorities defined by the city with possible applications, tools and/or models offered by each of the partners.

The ARCH initiative aims to preserve the natural and cultural heritage from geological and climate change dangers. A disaster risk guide will be created in order to assess and boost the ability to protect heritage from climate change and natural disasters.

In addition, tools and methodologies will be designed for local authorities and the population, and for communities of national and international experts. These will include several models, methods, tools and data sets to support decision-making.

The interdisciplinary team of experts includes four European cities and towns ( Bratislava, Camerino, Hamburg and Valencia); research scientists, the ICLEI network of local and regional governments, and the DIN standards organisation.
