Euskampus promotes cooperation projects to address the COVID-19 pandemic

Along with the UPV/EHU, the University of Bordeaux, and the DIPC we offer a collective, local, and cross-border response to the health crisis and its socioeconomic consequences

The main objective of this initiative, called the Euskampus Resilience Programme, is that researchers of these institutions collaborate to address the different challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. These nine projects have a great potential scientific, technological, economic and social impact, addressing issues such as reliable diagnosis and prognosis; effective prevention and treatment; monitoring and tracing of infections; protection and equipment to face biological hazards; anticipation and overcoming of this crisis or others that could arise; thus promoting their ability to recover and generate a resilient society.

The complexity of the challenges of today's situation requires the promotion of joint actions with innovative designs that go beyond disciplinary dynamics. Since the COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and the subsequent state of health emergency, researchers from UPV/EHU, TECNALIA, DIPC, and UBx have shown great ability to reply, designing numerous research projects and participating in different public tenders and private enterprises.

In the opinion of Iñaki San Sebastián, CEO of TECNALIA, “If we are learning something during this crisis it would be that science and technology, the constant effort of our researchers, are also essential activities in our society. A good example of this are the four collaborative projects in which we participate at TECNALIA within the Euskampus Resilience Programme to improve the quality of life of people to make our entrepreneurial network increasingly competitive:

  • COVID-19 diagnostic support system through the analysis of chest X-rays for quick screening of acute respiratory syndromes.
  • Development of reliable prognostic models for health management.
  • COVID-19 sanitation robot that can open doors to move autonomously within buildings.
  • Exacerbation of the antibiotic resistance health crisis associated to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
