“TECNALIA and PRYSMIAN jointly carried out the tests and verifications from both islands"

Validation tests for the commissioning of the Ibiza-Formentera submarine interconnection

The submarine interconnection between the islands of Ibiza/Eivissa and Formentera uses a 132 kV double circuit, each with a transmission capacity of 53 MVA. The connection extends from the Torrent substation in Ibiza to the new Formentera substation. It consists of a 5.3 km underground section in Ibiza, a 27 km underwater section and a final overland section of 4.8 km on the island of Formentera.

The tests were carried out by means of the parallel connection of two Variable Frequency Resonant Systems, supplied by TECNALIA and PRYSMIAN respectively, and located next to the end of the connection at the Torrent substation on the island of Ibiza.

The results of the tests were fully satisfactory.

The tests were carried out jointly by TECNALIA and PRYSMIAN, manufacturer and supplier of the cable and the company in charge of the laying and commissioning of the submarine interconnection for RED ELÉCTRICA. Engineers and technical experts from both companies travelled to the islands of Ibiza and Formentera to carry out the full validation test programme defined in the RED ELÉCTRICA Technical Specification.

These tests included partial discharge measurements on all circuit accessories, including the 69 terrestrial and terrestrial-submarine transition splices of both circuits. The results of the tests were fully satisfactory, and the interconnection wasput into service in June.

The new interconnection represents a leap in the guarantee of supply in Ibiza and Formentera; especially in the latter, as it will enable 100% of its demand to be covered under safe conditions for the system, minimising the operating needs of local generation and, therefore, reducing costs for the system and fostering the energy transition by means of an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions.

Our electrical laboratories are accredited by @ILAC according to the ISO 17025 gstandard for on-sitetesting prior to the commissioning of high-voltage underground and submarine cables.
