“TECNALIA, together with other European partners, is promoting the new European Open Source Academy to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty”
The new European Open Source Academy, launched by the OSAwards project, fosters the development of knowledge in the sector.
The EU-funded OSAwards project aims to boost Europe’s innovation and sovereignty through open-source excellence and knowledge. It recently celebrated two important milestones: the launch of the European Open Source Academy and the opening ceremony of the European Open Source Awards.
The European Open Source Academy, inspired by prestigious European institutions, will foster the development of knowledge, debate and inspiration to promote the use of and contributions to Open Source. Its members are leading experts in open source technologies.
Opening awards ceremony
The opening ceremony of the project gave awards to four exceptional individuals for their contributions to the open source community:
- The Open Source Achievement Award went to Daniel Stenberg, founder of cURL, a software component used worldwide. “I am honoured and humbled,” said Stenberg. “Open source is the foundation of any modern digital infrastructure, and we must continue to strengthen it”.
- The Business & Impact award went to Amandine Le Pape, COO and co-founder of Element, a secure and interoperable communication platform, who said “it is an honour to receive this award”. “I hope to have a stronger voice to help the open source ecosystem”.
- The Skills and Education Award went to David Cuartielles, co-founder of Arduino and Professor of Interaction Design at Malmö University.
- Finally, the award for Promotion and Awareness-Raising went to Lydia Pintscher, Wikidata manager at Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. “It is an honour to receive this award,” said Pintscher. “It recognises the fantastic work done by thousands of people across Europe to build and maintain an infrastructure where we can have control over our digital lives”.
“TECNALIA is proud to be part of the OSAwards.eu project and its mission to advance open source in Europe,” says Juncal Alonso, Project Manager. “The Academy and the Awards are vital steps in recognising the contributions of the open source community and fostering its continued growth.”
The OSAwards.eu initiative will run until May 2027 and is the result of collaboration between RISE (coordinator), OpenForum Europe, TECNALIA, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, APELL and Trust-IT.
