“TECNALIA’s aerial robot, designed with omnidirectional flight architecture, is able to operate in adverse weather conditions while maintaining high precision performance”
Our aerial robot adapts to a wide range of applications
Spain has become the second country in Europe with the highest amount of installed wind power and renewable energy production. As a result, inspection and maintenance work has increased at wind farms. Drones are capable of revolutionising the way in which wind turbine inspections are carried out, offering an efficient, safe and accurate solution for assessing the condition of these structures. Thanks to their ability to perform tasks at heights and access areas that are hard to reach, drones and aerial robotics are becoming essential tools for the wind industry.
These aerial robots are equipped with high-resolution cameras and specialised sensors that capture both detailed images and data on the condition of the wind turbines. The detection of cracks and deformations and the possibility of assessing erosion and wear of the blades are examples of the main applications that provide a complete, real-time view of the structural health of these structures.
In addition to their ability to carry out visual inspections, drones can also carry out thermographic inspections, which can identify thermal anomalies accurately and quickly, facilitating early detection of potential internal faults and reducing wind turbines downtime.
Omnidirectional architecture design
TECNALIA aims to enhance the way in which these inspection and maintenance tasks are carried out. Its aerial robot, designed with omnidirectional flight architecture, is able to operate in adverse weather conditions while maintaining high precision performance. The drone’s architecture gives it great versatility and enables it to fly and position itself in any direction, even upside down. The ability to point the sensor or inspection/maintenance tool in the desired direction opens the door to a whole new range of possible interventions.
This development is not only suitable for a wide range of applications, from inspecting wind turbine blades to measuring the thickness of gas tanks and checking welds; it also eliminates the need for manual intervention and improves the automation of tasks at heights or in remote areas.
