“The value of data: tools are already available”
50 companies and organisations promote data spaces in industry
The COTEC Foundation for Innovation and TECNALIA held a conference called “Creation of shared data spaces in industry”, gathering more than 60 professionals from the sector representing more than 50 companies and organisations. The keys to overcoming the reluctance to use shared data spaces were discussed. There is technology today that makes them safe and reliable: they can be used as a driving force to increase the competitiveness of the industry.
The conference was attended by Carlos Alonso, Director of the Spanish Government’s Data Office; Cristina Oyón, Director of Technology at SPRI; Francisca Rubio, Manager of GAIA-X Spain; Jorge Morillo, Chair of the Cloud Commission and Gaia-X WG of AMETIC; and Jorge Barrero, Director of COTEC, as well as other experts.
The value of data: tools are already available
A guide to open data and data sharing in the business environment was presented, and the importance of data spaces and their business value was discussed. An overview of lessons learnt was also shared, as well as the positioning and opportunities of Spanish companies in data spaces.
- Technological components that can already be used.
- Privacy and identity, the keys to secure sharing.
- Data quality as an essential element for the business value of this technology.
Data spaces as a strategy for the present and the future
Shared data spaces are spaces where collaboration and data exchange between different organisations or individuals is possible and reliable. Instead of keeping data in inaccessible silos, shared data spaces allow different stakeholders to access the same data wherever they are, and use it for various purposes.
These data spaces can:
- Reduce costs: Data sharing allows different organisations to save on data collection and storage costs, as the data is in a single place for anyone to use it.
- Increase efficiency: Work more efficiently, as you do not have to double efforts in data collection and analysis, as this can be done by an agent as a service.
- Increased accuracy: improving the accuracy of data by enabling different actors to complement and verify each other's data.
- New opportunities: new opportunities for collaboration and business between different actors that had not been considered before, including those intended for sharing.
- Increased transparency: improving transparency and accountability by enabling different actors to access and use the same data for decision-making.
TECNALIA’s strategy in this area focuses on the capabilities needed to help the industry in general and manufacturing in particular, to make its digital transformation sustainable by including the technology associated with shared data spaces: technology such as data analytics and data cleansing and matching, cybersecurity and blockchain around data privacy and security, and interoperability between different data and platforms.
