Urban Klima 2050, a climate action project set to transform the Basque Country in the near future

Iñaki Arriola, Basque regional minister for the Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing, has launched LIFE Integrado Urban Klima 2050, considered the climate action project for the Basque Country. To be rolled out over the coming years, it will involve a direct investment of €19.8 million in climate actions; it will be funded 51% by the EU.

Urban Klima 2050 will coordinate a total of 40 climate change projects and actions over six years, completely transforming the Basque Country. It will also pave the way for the effective roll-out of the Klima 2050 Climate Change Strategy for the Basque Country, which has as its main aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by the year 2030.

Headed by Environmental Department public company Ihobe, the project will involve several Basque Government departments, all three provincial councils, seven city councils (Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Donostia-San Sebastian, Bermeo, Bakio, Gernika-Lumo and Zarautz), AZTI, BC3, Neiker-TECNALIA, TECNALIA and Tecnun technological research centres and the Naturklima Foundation.

“The consortium putting the project in place encompasses more than 20 organisations, all working together to reach our stated goals. All have enormous solvency and experience in combating climate change, as is clear from the fact that the series of actions scheduled until 2025 will require an overall investment of almost €20 million”, underlined Arriola.

The 40 projects will include specific actions for three areas: the coast, river basins and urban areas. Pilot initiatives will be put in place in seven towns, as well as in periurban areas of Urdaibai, the Debabarrena coast and Rioja Alavesa. Projects will also be slated for the courses and mouths of the Butrón, Oka, Ibaizabal, Deba, Urumea, Zadorra, Baia and Ebro rivers.
