Nuclear fusion, a sustainable energy solution

Participación de TECNALIA en el proyecto ITER

"We are looking for the viability of a new form of clean, cheap and sustainable energy generation"

We are working on the construction of an experimental nuclear fusion reactor

At TECNALIA, in collaboration with other companies, we innovate in coating and surface engineering technologies, joining technologies between dissimilar superalloys and characterisation techniques for components of plasma beam collision and cooling systems.

Renewable energies offer an alternative to fossil fuel-based generation but are subject to the discrete availability of sun or wind. However, nuclear fusion is a method of continuous power generation using elements that are more or less unlimited as fuels, without producing greenhouse gases.

The next step is to scale the process from a laboratory experiment to an industrial dimension. The availability of industrial solutions is not immediate, requires major technological developments and high investment. Nuclear fusion is a long-term solution to the need for clean and sustainable energy.

Development of fusion solutions

There are a number of initiatives aimed at developing fusion solutions. ITER, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, stands out for its large scale. More than 35 countries are participating.

Companies in the Basque Country are very active due to their experience in manufacturing processes with extremely high levels of precision, quality and reliability in materials and alloys with very high added value.

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the USA will go down in history for carrying out tests on 5th December 2022 which produced more energy than a nuclear fusion process based on inertial confinement.
