Waste recovery, digitalisation and energy consumption: challenges for the iron and steel industry

5 December 2019

Businesses are opting for R&D and innovation to transform and improve their products and processes

The iron and steel industry is responsible for 7% of all CO2 emissions worldwide. Ever since the US imposed a 25% tariff on imported steel, much of third-country production has shifted to the EU.

The slump in the automotive sector - the second-largest consumer of steel in Spain, allied with high energy costs and environmental regulations, has created a climate of uncertainty that needs to be addressed.

On 28 November last, steel producers, including ACERINOX, ARCELORMITTAL, CELSA GROUP, GSW, NERVACERO, OLARRA, PRODUCTOS TUBULARES, SIDENOR, TUBACEX and TUBOS REUNIDOS, joined with steel processors ARATUBO, CIE AUTOMOTIVE, TATA STEEL and VICINAY, associations, including PLATEA, SIDEREX and UNESID, service providers and R&D centres, to discuss actions to deal with the challenges facing the sector.
