"Artificial intelligence has gone from merely being a speculative fiction to a fundamental element of technological progress"

Our colleagues, Javier del Ser and Jesús López Lobo, explore the transformational potential of artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered to be a transformational force with the potential to redefine numerous sectors of human civilisation. Although it has gone from merely being a speculative fiction to a fundamental element of technological progress, its role as a truly transformational agent continues to be the subject of intense debate. This is not surprising as there are high hopes for it.

In a recent project, our colleagues, Javier del Ser and Jesús López Lobo, have written an article on the transformational potential of AI for civilisation, delving into its philosophical, ethical, technological and human implications. This study, by the name of "Can transformative AI shape a new age for our civilisation?: navigating between speculation and reality", is available for download.

Philosophical, ethical, technological and human implications of AI

Our colleagues' work explores the historical precedents of other disruptive technological advances, examining whether AI can achieve a comparable impact and form part of this selective list. In the process, they delve into the various ethical and philosophical frameworks that shape our perception of AI and affect its development. Furthermore, they consider the social, technical and regulatory challenges that must be addressed for AI to become the catalyst for change in our civilisation.

Strategies and barriers to transformational AI

It reviews not only the strategies and methodologies that could lead to truly transformational AI, but also the barriers that could ultimately make these goals unattainable. They conclude with a critical investigation into whether achieving transformational AI could force humanity to adopt an entirely new ethical and philosophical approach, tailored to the complexities of this new AI.

By addressing these dimensions in its development, this work contributes to the broader discourse regarding the long-term implications of AI and its ability to lead civilisation into a new era of progress, or conversely exacerbate existing inequalities and risks.
