“Our experts showcased some of our innovative labs, such as the 3D printing lab, the DigiLab for construction, Kubik or the Smart Mobility Lab”
We welcomed SACYR at TECNALIA's facilities to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the construction sector
During an intense day, we discussed sustainable and digital construction and building, smart transport infrastructures, sustainable urban mobility, the role of energy transition and water resource management; and how technology can enable us to meet these challenges and take advantage of emerging opportunities.
Our experts showcased some of our innovative laboratories, such as the 3D printing lab, the DigiLab for construction, Kubik or the Smart Mobility Lab, among others.
It was a truly enriching day in which we have explored ways of collaborating on joint initiatives, in addition to mapping existing joint projects.
Circular economy in construction waste
At the end of last year, the VALREC projectwas launched, led by Surge Ambiental and Valoriza (Sacyr Group), in which TECNALIA participates as a technological partner. The main objective of the project is to promote the circular economy in construction and demolition waste (CDW) through innovative solutions.
VALREC seeks to generate a high environmental impact. On the one hand, it aims to reduce the carbon footprint of participating companies by approximately 20% compared to the baseline scenario. It also seeks to increase the circulation of mineral resources to higher value-added construction products by approximately 30% approximately, avoiding dumping up to two million tons of CDW each year.
The economic impact on companies would reach €17.2 million a year as a result of the exploitation of the findings, following private investment of €2 million.
In terms of social impact, the initiative will create jobs, train professionals and generate knowledge between construction firms and recovery machinery related to digital and green technologies.
More about VALREC
- VALREC, an initiative to boost the circular economy in construction and demolition waste
- Surge Ambiental and Valoriza (Sacyr Group) lead the VALREC initiative along with ALLGAIER MOGENSEN, ADCORE, SIKA, SODIRA, HORMICRUZ, KOLOKIUM and GBCe (Green Building Council Spain). The initiative has the support of TECNALIA, the Eduardo Torroja Institute for Construction Science (IETcc) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
VALREC is a project funded within the framework of the 2020 call for aid to contribute to the improvement of public-private cooperation in R&D in areas of strategic importance for Madrid’s economy related to tractor projects developed by Open Innovation Centres (INNOVATION HUBS) within the Regional Research and Innovation Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3).
It is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the ERDF Operational Program of the Community of Madrid for the 2014-2020 period.
