TECNALIA gives a presentation on the protocol for action in urban areas affected by subterranean termite attacks

TECNALIA colleague Josu Benito Ayúcar, architect with more than 15 years of experience in the inspection of wooden structures, gave a presentation on the operation of the inspection phase of the standard “UNE-56.418: 2016 Protocol of action in urban areas affected by subterranean termite attacks”, of which he is also the author, among others, as a member of subcommittee 4 of CTN 56 of AENOR.

The presentation focused on the second phase of the protocol, inspection and generation of the municipality’s “termite map”, a document which mainly aims to show the severity and extent of termite attacks within the municipality’s scope of action. This document is part of the basis for municipalities to put out the work out to tender, helping the treatment companies to understand the scale of the problem to be treated.

The scope and theoretical objectives of the four phases of the standard were presented first, followed by a detailed explanation of the actual operation of the inspection phase through the presentation of a real case study, specifically the one carried out in the municipality of Areatza (Bizkaia), showing it step by step with a range of images and videos of the specific case.

Apart from the technical operation and methodology applied by TECNALIA technicians in this type of work, the importance of the management of the entrance to the buildings by the local councils was highlighted. In the specific case of Areatza, the case was highlighted due to the good management and coordination of the visits by the City Council and the attitude of the residents, which resulted in the timely inspection of 87 buildings out of the 88 planned.

TECNALIA would like to thank ANECPLA for the opportunity to present termite control work in urban areas and the opportunity to learn about the work and progress of the sector. A forum that was definitely interesting and an opportunity for all colleagues in the sector.
