Circular economy and obtaining products for the chemical, energy and agricultural industries from micro-algae

11 June 2018

The circular economy and biorefinery allow for the best use of the available resources

Coinciding with the BIOTERRA 2018 trade fair of ecological products, bio-construction, renewable energy and sustainable consumption, the CYCLALG network, in which experts from the Basque Country, Navarra, Pau and Toulouse participate, presented several developments related to the algal biorefinery, the heterotrophic cultivation of micro-algae, obtaining biodiesel and bio-products and the recovery of waste, within a framework of the circular economy.

Around thirty companies and technology centres from the Basque Country, Navarra and Aquitaine from scientific, technological and business sectors related to the circular economy and the biorefinery of micro-algae expressed great interest in these issues. The conference served to foster the links between the R&D centres and industry, facilitate technology transfer, discover the region's technological developments in relation to the circular economy and the possibilities of collaboration available at a regional, national and cross-border level.

The developments described and the conference have been carried out within the framework of CYCLALG, the objective of which is to develop and validate technological processes to increase the economic profitability and the environmental sustainability of obtaining biodiesel and bio-products with added value through the heterotrophic cultivation of micro-algae.

CYCLALG has been co-financed to 65% by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the Interreg V-A Spain-France-Andorra programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020). The objective of POCTEFA is to reinforce the economic and social integration of the Spain-France-Andorra border area. Its assistance is focused on the development of cross-border economic, social and environmental activities through joint strategies in favour of sustainable territorial development.
