“We are working on the integrated demonstration of inter-regional innovation”
The European DEREMCO initiative improves the circular economy in the composites sector
This initiative aims to create an inter-sectoral, systemic, circular economy solution: it will allow for the cost-effective re-use of end-of-life composite materials and components in new high added-value products.
TECNALIA will develop technologies for circular value chains, focused on the recycling of plastics and composite materials in our region. To this end, recycling technologies will be implemented with IDEC, BIRZIPLASTIK and RECICLALIA in order to position them as leading companies in the circular economy within their respective sectors.
This solution will be based on the interaction between technical and social ecosystems at a local and inter-regional level, and will benefit the environment, industry, consumers and European society. Two circular pilot processes will be used to meet consumer demands: mechanical recycling and hybrid reprocessing, along with thermochemical recycling and textile reprocessing.
More conscious consumer behaviour
We seek to transform the circular value chain into a "pull" system in which demands and specifications for reusable materials and components are transferred directly from the demand side, based on the qualities and functions of high value-added products that use them. The main objectives will be to encourage industrial adoption within local ecosystems, eliminate the risk of future industrial adoption through private investment and raise awareness of more conscious consumption behaviour to ensure sustainability and continuity.
TECNALIA is leading Work Package Two in which 11 partners are participating. It focuses on "integrated demonstration of inter-regional innovation" based on three objectives:
- Develop and validate demand-driven demanufacturing chains to obtain reusable materials for composite parts, with emphasis on mechanical and thermochemical processes.
- Prepare materials for re-use through splicing techniques to improve fibre performance, textile preparation and compounding processes.
- Use hybrid reprocessing methods involving forming and additive manufacturing technologies.
More information about DEREMCO
DEREMCO is an EU-funded project involving 30 European partners from Italy, Finland, Austria, Spain, Slovenia, Belgium and Portugal, which started in December 2022. The project partners have the mission to create an inter-sectoral, systemic and demand-driven solution for the circular economy that enables the cost-effective re-use of composite materials and components for their subsequent use in new, high added-value products.
This project has received funding from the EU European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under grant agreement No. 101084037.
