"We have developed the BIDERATU comprehensive modelling system to support strategic decision-making to steer the Basque Country's energy transition"
The BIDERATU comprehensive modelling system for the energy transition is a system developed specifically for the Basque Country
The BIDERATU system is based on a hard-link between the multi-sectoral energy model and the macroeconomic model. It also enables alternative energy and climate scenarios for the Basque Country (2030, 2040, 2050) to be designed and evaluated in great detail, making it possible to reach the sub-sector and technologies level. It also considers the life-cycle perspective and circular economy aspects for the prioritisation of strategies. This represents an advance in research compared to what is currently available on the market for comprehensive modelling on a regional scale.
Guiding the transformation towards a decarbonised future
The BIDERATU comprehensive modelling system has been developed to obtain energy and climate planning to guide the process of transforming the Basque Country towards a carbon neutral future. This system supports strategic decision-making by both the industrial sector and and public administrations.
In addition to the tightening of emission reduction targets, to which the different countries and regions have to respond, there is also the problem associated with the lack of modelling tools adapted to each regional reality; tools that should enable us to carry out comprehensive and prospective analysis considering the interrelationships between the energy, economic, social and environmental dimensions.
BIDERATU Initiative
This comprehensive system has been developed within the framework of the BIDERATU project (Elkartek 2021 programme) led from TECNALIA by Lara Mabe and Eneko Arrizabalaga in collaboration with BC3, Mondragon University, Energy Cluster and ACLIMA. The project was successfully completed in March 2023.
