Creating Smart Zero CO2 Cities in Europe

12 March 2018

New measures have been established to achieve an efficient use of energy and a reduction of CO2 emissions

Along with Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, TECNALIA is participating in the SmartEnCity project, which has been selected by the President's Office as one of the ten emblematic projects of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Plan 2020 (PCTI).

SmartEnCity, considered to be an emblematic project in the urban habitat, seeks new ways of intervening in cities to achieve an efficient use of energy and a reduction of CO2 emissions.

The actions considered in the project are defined and located in specific neighbourhoods, so that they can serve as an example to other areas and cities.

The transition of cities towards sustainable, smart, participative and efficient use of urban resources is at the heart of this project, which seeks this transition through the integrated planning and implementation of measures intended to increase energy efficiency in the main consumer sectors in small and medium-sized cities in Europe, whilst increasing their renewable energy supply and showing the usefulness of these measures.

This highly adaptable and reproducible systematic focus is planned and implemented in three "Lighthouse" demonstrators: Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), Tartu (Estonia) and Sønderborg (Denmark) and it will be replicated in two “follower” cities: Lecce (Italy) and Asenovgrad (Bulgaria).
