“Developing healthy environments that preserve and improve people's health and quality of life is one of our commitments”

Technological solutions aimed at promoting healthy ageing of people through nutrition

Developing healthy environments that preserve and improve people's health and quality of life is one of our commitments. For this reason, TECNALIA is working on developing technological solutions aimed at promoting the healthy ageing of people through food, developing functional ingredients, personalised nutrition, risk and disease prevention, medical robotics and neurorehabilitation, solutions that can help older people maintain their physical and cognitive capacity, as well as their social activity and participation.

International Day for Older Persons is celebrated on October 1 and it is essential to work for health and healthy ageing

Being able to personalise health with increasingly accurate diagnostics and advanced therapy treatments is key. Another of our lines of work is the prevention of chronic diseases through healthy food consumption.

Food plays a fundamental role and, in this regard, we have developed active compounds that have an effect on preventing high-incidence diseases and result in healthier, more balanced food with greater nutritional value.

Without doubt, what we eat affects our immune system. A healthy diet, appropriate to our nutritional needs, which is even more important for older people, is necessary for good health and to maintain a strong immune system to help protect the body from external invaders such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins. TECNALIA develops ingredients and foods with immunomodulatory effects.

Physical assessment and training for older people

It is essential to optimise strength training in older people and we have been working on this by developing a system capable of defining and determining the ideal training frequency for each person and muscle group. This is because proper physical fitness in older people helps prevent falls and improves their quality of life.

As such, frailty plays an important role in older people and is a major factor in the development and occurrence of complications in most medical situations, including disability, worsening mobility, falls, hospitalisation and death.

Frail older people often have multiple risk factors, not only in terms of their physical health, but also their psychological and social health. Therefore, assessment of frailty can help put treatment strategies and interventions in place to reduce these risks.

We are committed to health and nutrition, and you can find out much more about our work on TECNALIA's personalised health page.
