Losán Solid Wood, the first sawmill in Spain to place mechanically graded structural timber on the market
The company Losán Solid Wood, Losán’s sawmill division, has obtained the CE marking certificate as per standards UNE-En 14081-3 and 14081-3, making it the first sawmill in Spain to market wood for structural use in Europe.
Technical staff of the Timber Construction and Industry area of Cesefor have carried out the technical assistance to advise Losán Solid Wood – the sawmilling division of Losán in the province of Soria – in the process of obtaining the CE marking.
CE Marking
The CE marking is a safety marking that shows compliance with certain minimum requirements that are essential for products to be placed on the European market. This is a mandatory regulation that takes a few months to be implemented.
The technical assistance provided by Cesefor involved developing the necessary documentation and advice for correct production control in the factory. This enables the control of traceability of all timber intended for structural use throughout the entire process and ensures the conformity of the declared performance.
Losán Solid Wood staff have also been trained to carry out mechanical grading of wood. This is carried out with equipment that includes algorithms developed by Cesefor researchers (“settings”) for Scots pine, maritime pine and radiata pine and which have been approved by the European Committee.
Mechanical grading to determine the strength of materials has some advantages over visual grading, such as cost reduction, as it is carried out more quickly; as well as an increase in the yield of wood, as the rejection of some pieces is reduced and their market value is increased. Losán Solid Wood thus becomes the first sawmill in Spain to place mechanically graded structural timber on the market.
Cesefor, as a centre specialising in the development of projects in the forestry sector and the timber industry, has so far assisted more than 40 companies throughout Spain in their CE marking implementation processes.

TECNALIA Certificación a company belonging to the TECNALIA group, the leading private applied research centre in Spain and one of the most important in Europe, was in charge of certifying the products in accordance with the EN 14081-1 standard.
Obtaining this certification proves Losán’s hard work with structural timber and commitment to guaranteeing a product that meets all the conditions required by European regulations in order to be placed on the market.
