INNOPROTEIN is a sustainable solution to the EU protein gap

The INNOPROTEIN project fits into the Farm-to-Fork strategy and the European Green Deal priorities, addressing unexploited and sustainable (environmental, technological, economical and social) protein sources to accelerate Europe’s protein self-sufficiency. InnoProtein boosts European protein self-sufficiency by addressing novel (environmental, technological, economic and social) protein sources. It aims to provide high-quality single-cell protein (SCP) (microalgae, bacteria and fungi) and alternative entomological protein for food, feed and non-food bio-based applications with a circular and zero-waste perspective in their production.

The world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050. This growth poses one of the greatest global environmental, economic and social challenges: to produce enough high-quality protein in a sustainable way, reducing the current production pressure on natural resources.

In this context, the EU is vulnerable due to its “protein gap”. There is an urgent need for new sustainable protein sources with high nutritional, health and functional properties that meet the needs and expectations of end-users in the food, feed and non-food bio-based markets.

New sustainable protein sources

INNOPROTEIN has a strong multi-stakeholder approach involving 14 partners, including technology providers, industrial partners and a consumer-oriented partner from nine different European countries.

This collaborative approach ensures that the project is well-placed to address the challenges of protein production and contribute to sustainability and food safety in Europe.
