“Leading companies in the Basque food chain join forces to revolutionise waste management in the production and distribution of fresh and perishable foods”

TECNALIA strengthens the Basque Country’s position as a key technology provider for economic and environmental sustainability in the agri-food sector

TECNALIA helps to develop innovative solutions like sustainable and recyclable packaging developed with recycled PET for EROSKI; a 100% recyclable mono-material sustainable PET solution for primary packaging such as films with “barrier” properties for plastic bags for PLASTIGAUR; and microwave-safe PET packaging for UDAPA.

N0Waste focuses not only on waste reduction, but also on increasing transparency towards consumers, improving problem detection in the cold chain and promoting waste recovery by generating high-purity biohydrogen and biomethane.

TECNALIA has converted the CO2 in biogas, which comes from organic waste, into synthetic natural gas using a millichannel reactor. This avoids the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere while efficiently obtaining a gas of sufficient quality to be directly used or injected into the existing natural gas network.

Waste management in fresh and perishable food production and distribution

Leading companies and organisations in the food and technology chain in the Basque Country are joining forces in the ambitious N0Waste project which aims to revolutionise waste management in the production and distribution of fresh and perishable foods.

This project, backed by the RIS3 Euskadi Smart Specialisation Strategy and the Basque 2030 Science, Technology and Innovation Plan for Smart Industry, is a milestone in the search for sustainable and technological solutions.

Digitalisation, sustainable packaging materials and bioenergy generation

N0Waste aims to research key enabling technologies within the knowledge areas of digitalisation, sustainable packaging materials and bioenergy generation. These are aimed at managing, reducing and recovering (upcycling) waste from fresh and perishable products to be applied transversally within the Basque agri-food sector.

The consortium of participating companies, ranging from the food chain to technology suppliers, will strengthen territorial cohesion and value proposals in the Basque Country.

Leading companies such as UDAPA, EROSKI, IZERTIS, SEGULA TECHNOLOGIES, TECNIPESA, PLASTIGAUR, LOINTEK, ORLOGA, ONDOAN, BARRENETXE, HARAKAI URKAIKO, TECNALIA, CEIT and the BASQUE FOOD CLUSTER come together under the leadership of ONDOAN to promote innovation and sustainability.
