“With the restoration work carried out, we hope that the Church of San Andrés will once again shine as a beacon of Eibar’s history and culture”

TECNALIA and ZETABI are working together to give a new lease of life to the timber roof of the Church of San Andrés in Eibar

An exciting restoration project is about to begin at the Church of San Andrés in Eibar. It aims to restore this architectural treasure to its former glory. TECNALIA’s Timber Engineering team, in collaboration with the ZETABI architecture studio, is leading the execution project and project management to refurbish the timber roof of this historic church.

The Church of San Andrés, a monument that is several centuries old, has witnessed the history of Eibar and its inhabitants. However, over time, the wood that makes up its majestic roof has suffered from the elements and pests such as wood-decay fungi, termites, woodworm, breakage and fire. These problems have caused the main trusses to move significantly and some of them now rest on the stone vaults. Not only is this situation unsuitable, but it has also contributed to the deterioration of the original structure and geometry of the church.

TECNALIA to use state-of-the-art laser scanning technology

To carry out this ambitious restoration work, TECNALIA’s Timber Engineering team will use state-of-the-art laser scanning technology to obtain a point cloud that will reveal the state of conservation and the precise geometry of the roof. This information will be essential in order to develop an action plan that will include both specific repairs and general reconstruction of the roof, restoring it to its original state and ensuring its stability for years to come.

This restoration project is not only an architectural rescue, but also a commitment to the history and heritage of Eibar. The Church of San Andrés is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of the past: this restoration work ensures that their legacy is preserved for future generations. The refurbishment of the church will provide a space for the local community to meet and reflect, promoting a connection with history and tradition.
