“TECNALIA is working together with leading companies and other research organisations on the development of a satellite communications system”
Together with Anzen Engineering, TECNALIA is designing methodologies based on artificial intelligence and natural language processing.
TECNALIA is working with leading companies and other research organisations to develop a satellite communications system (SATCOM) for rotary-wing helicopters to overcome the current technological challenges in aerial communications, especially in critical operations such as search, rescue and surveillance.
With Anzen Engineering, TECNALIA is designing and verifying model-based methodologies for safety and reliability analysis based on artificial intelligence (AI), and natural language processing (NLP) techniques.
This development is part of the CORSARIO project: it is a milestone in the technological development of aviation towards a safer more efficient and sustainable aeronautics industry in Spain and around the world.
A more sustainable aeronautics industry
Helicopters have trouble transmitting large volumes of data due to bandwidth limitations. This means that they have to incorporate bulky equipment, which in turn increases their weight and, therefore, reduces efficiency and increases consumption, and the communications system is not reliable.
This requires a focus on bandwidth optimisation and energy efficiency of satellite communications, operating in high-frequency, broad-spectrum bands that take advantage of geostationary constellations to ensure continuous coverage on the ground.
In this way, by designing flat antennas and using electronic pointing, the aircraft’s aerodynamics is improved. This reduces its weight and, therefore, fuel consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of emissions and the progress towards a more sustainable aviation industry.
