TECNALIA collaborates with AIADEK to create high-quality paints with minimised titanium

7 September 2020

The TiGABE initiative will turn the SME into a pioneer in the development of a line of products adapted to the new EC Regulation No. 2020/217

TiGABE works on manufacturing high-quality decorative paints with minimised titanium; focusing mainly on the production of new water-based decorative paints, using titanium dioxide alternatives.

France is leading the development in terms of the regulations on titanium. In November 2015, the ECHA registered a proposal for the harmonised classification of TiO2 as carcinogen category 1B, H350i: “May cause cancer by inhalation”. In October 2017, the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) proposed to classify that substance as carcinogen (category 2) by inhalation; a proposal which was accepted and published in February 2020 and that will be applied pursuant to a transition period.

The project began in 2019 and was framed within the HAZITEK programme of the Economic Development and Competitiveness Department of the Basque Government; led by the SME AIADEK in collaboration with TECNALIA.
