“During the conference, TECNALIA was able to compare the usefulness and validity of different technological solutions and innovations with different cities and regions”

TECNALIA took part in “Valencia Cities Climate Week” as a key player in the EU Climate-Neutral Cities and Climate Change Adaptation missions

In the last week of June, Valencia hosted Cities Climate Week, coordinating three key meetings: the Annual Mission Cities Conference, the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) and the Annual Energy Cities Forum. As a key partner in projects linked to the European Union's missions of Climate-Neutral Cities and Adaptation to Climate Change, the TECNALIA team was actively involved in these events, contributing its experience and innovations.

Technological innovation for the climate transition

It is essential that the innovations and tools that are developed to drive and aid the climate transition of cities are useful and respond to the needs of cities. TECNALIA has been able to test the usefulness and validity of various developments in different cities and regions.

  • As part of the NetZeroCitiesinitiative, TECNALIA is developing technological services to support cities in the development of their Climate Transition Maps that will allow the process to be more efficient, agile and smart. At the conference, TECNALIA was able to validate their suitability for cities first-hand.
  • At EURESFO, TECNALIA was able to talk to several regions about the toolbox it is developing as part of the Pathways2Resilience initiative, to help regions in their transformational adaptation process become more resilient to climate change.

Urban regeneration

In addition to technological and digital support, TECNALIA supports cities with its expert knowledge in various fields. More specifically, it collaborated in the Built Environment Policy Lab launch workshop at the conference, led by Eurocities.

During the session, in conjunction with Vitoria-Gasteiz and Valencia - Spanish pilot cities in the UrbanNew initiative - TECNALIA discussed the challenge of the One-Stop Shop as a key instrument in deploying and accelerating urban regeneration projects. The conclusions drawn from this workshop will contribute to the development of guidelines and recommendations for implementing the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

Climate services for more resilient development

As part of the workshops within the framework of the Adaptation Mission, the TECNALIA team, as a partner of the Pathways2Resilience and REACHOUT initiatives, moderated the session aimed at understanding the role of climate services in shaping policies and decisions for a more climate-resilient development.

  • The team also had the opportunity to present the latest news on the DesirMED and NBRACER initiatives, which focus on improving resilience through adaptation solutions in the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions respectively.
  • They were also able to discuss fair climate resilience and multi-scale governance with regions such as Pärnu (Estonia), with whom TECNALIA is working on the Regions4Climate initiative.
  • As coordinator of the RescueMe initiative, TECNALIA presented the new EU Atlas of Coastal Heritage Landscape Typologies and Climate Change Impacts: these present the typologies and risks that threaten European coastal cultural landscapes in the form of maps.

Following the session, local project partner Las Naves described the cultural value and vulnerability of the Huerta de Valencia, which includes physical heritage, agricultural systems, historical water management and socio-economic systems.
