"Effective health knowledge transfer requires constant collaboration and adaptability to put innovation at the service of society"

Our colleague, Sergio Muñoz Lezcano analyses the challenges and opportunities of the health innovation ecosystem in Spain.

In a recent article in MINDS Master, our colleague, Sergio Muñoz Lezcano analyses the challenges and opportunities of the health innovation ecosystem in Spain. It underlines the importance of improving the quality of life of patients and the efficiency of health systems. Despite being the world's eleventh largest scientific producer, Spain faces significant challenges in knowledge transfer.

  • Low investment in R&D
  • The need for a collaborative approach to integrate knowledge in SMEs

Proposed solutions include the Transfer and Collaboration Plan, led by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and the Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), which foster cooperation between universities, research centres and companies.

Furthermore, the importance of training and professionalisation is highlighted, as well as the role of Knowledge Transfer Offices (KTOs) to facilitate the connection between the academic environment and the productive sector.

The importance of knowledge transfer

In the article, Sergio points out that innovation in health has the potential to transform lives, but it is crucial that scientific knowledge is applied outside the laboratory. Knowledge transfer is essential to bring science to market, and Spain has the potential to be a leader in this field.

Policies like the Transfer and Collaboration Plan and new models in the university sector are positive steps. However, an effective strategy that connects all actors in the system and fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration is needed in order to achieve real impact.

Effective health knowledge transfer requires constant collaboration and adaptability. With a firm commitment, Spain can lead this change and put innovation at the service of society.
