We analyse and prevent failures in solar tracker motors installed in photovoltaic farms

TECNALIA has identified and evaluated failures in the solar tracker motors installed in a 50 MW photovoltaic farm. These devices enable the panels to adjust their orientation throughout the day to maximise sunlight capture, thereby optimising power generation.

Motor malfunctions not only reduce the efficiency of the system, but can also lead to significant economic losses if not addressed in time.

Collaborative and deep technical approach through the mobility labs and electrical lab

Our electrical experts identified that the source of the problem could be a miscalculation of the power consumption of the electrical control system, which regulates the movement of the solar trackers in outdoor conditions. The analysis was carried out in three stages:

  • The power consumption and torque of the electric motor were characterised using the test bench at the mobility laboratory.
  • An in-field consumption diagnosticwas carried out, recording the current during the natural movement of the solar tracker.
  • Finally, an internal assessment of the motors was carried out to detect any mechanical deterioration.

Precise technical results

The collaboration of the mobility lab experts, with their advanced knowledge of DC motors, was essential in order to accurately determine the power consumption and torque characteristics under different conditions, including unfavourable wind conditions. These tests revealed that the motor consumed more current than specified, while the measured torque was lower than indicated in the technical specifications.

To complete the investigation, we took in situ measurements with wattmeters, recording the actual consumption during the natural operation of the solar trackers.

Long-term results and benefits

The multidisciplinary combination of skills and knowledge between TECNALIA's electrical and mobility laboratories ensures a comprehensive approach, improving the ability to respond to complex failures and bringing added value to customers by providing robust and sustainable solutions.
