Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform as a precursor for other compounds

Ácidos grasos volátiles

Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform for biopolymers, bioactive compounds and chemical building blocks

Within the framework of this project, an innovative concept is implemented to transform municipal solid biowaste and sludgy biowaste from other industries through a volatile fatty acids platform (VFAP). These VFAP will be used as sources of carbon in fermentation processes to obtain added value compounds.

The main objectives and results of the VOLATILE Project are:

  • Support the establishment of a circular bioeconomy.
  • Development of the volatile fatty acids platform (VFAP) through the establishment of a systematic link of raw materials and anaerobic digestion procedures.
  • Development of a strategy of biotechnological processes for the recovery of VFA: obtaining PHA, single-cell oil for use in the oleochemical industry and omega-3 fatty acids for use in food.
  • CEN Workshop Agreement.
  • Roadmap indicating future research needs and legislative recommendations.
