TECNALIA held an event with senior executives from Acciona, ACWA, Cementos Rezola, Cobra Instalacionesy Servicios, EDF Spain, Elecnor, Ferrovial, Fortia Energía, Grupo Puma, Iberdrola, Intecsa, Madrid WCC, Microsoft, Navantia, Nordex Green Hydrogen, Red Eléctrica de España, Sacyr, Solaria and Técnicas Reunidas.

Francisco José Gan, retired lieutenant general of the Spanish army and guest lecturer at universities and business schools, was the keynote speaker at the event.

He is also the author of numerous publications in specialised journals on leadership, geopolitics and applied intelligence, and former vice-president of the Spanish Geographical Society.

Attendees agreed that it was a high-level debate, which served to align the construction of a common vision on geopolitics and strategic autonomy in energy, critical resources and technology.

Energy transition and strategic autonomy

Decarbonisation was the main energy challenge in Europe until the conflict in Ukraine showed us our vulnerability with regard to supply security. This has accelerated our strategy of using local renewable energy sources.

This situation forces us to rethink our technological sovereignty and the guarantee of access to critical materials and their recyclability. Europe, in its search for strategic autonomy, finds itself in the midst of a commercial and technological conflict between much larger players such as China and the US.

The aim of this meeting was to shed light on this crossroads. Attendees also discussed how it can turn into challenges and opportunities for players in industrial value chains and how innovation and technology are the levers that will allow us to take advantage of them.
