"The Artile jacket, which incorporates Latxa sheep wool in its filling, is one of the demonstrators in which the new methodology has been tested"
In conjunction with the Ternua Group, we are assessing the sustainability of products throughout their life cycle
The methodology developed within the framework of the European Orienting initiative, coordinated by TECNALIA, has been successfully tested in five European companies, including the Ternua Group.
The aim is to integrate a life-cycle approach that includes environmental, social and economic impact analysis. The Orienting consortium is developing a pioneering and comprehensive methodology to assess the sustainability of products and services throughout their life cycle.
The results of the project will enable business decisions to be made: they will contribute to the development of a level playing field and a single market for products based on sound, transparent and verifiable sustainability information.
Edu Uribesalgo from the Ternua Group assures that "we need to understand the impact of our decisions at every step of the product production process, from the selection of materials in the design phase, where and how it is produced and taking into account the end of the product's life cycle".
LCSA Orienting Methodology: environmental, social and economic impact
Existing approaches to sustainability assessment lack comprehensiveness, consistency and practical tools for implementation, resulting in fragmented and barely comparable information on product sustainability.
Against this background, the Orienting LCSA methodology provides an approach that considers the comprehensive environmental, social and economic impact.
Five demonstrators with the Orienting methodology
The case studies have had the opportunity to highlight the main lessons and benefits gained from the implementation of the evaluation. The Ternua Group, with TECNALIA as its technological partner, has tested the methodology on its Artile winter jacket. The development has also been tested in:
- BASF paint products and variants
- The Leiblein concrete recycling service
- Solana tomato preserves and packaging in Italy
- Stora Enso cartons for liquid food products
Open source methodology
The Orienting LCSA methodology is intended to be an open source methodology so that anyone can use it and provide services and products based on it.
This will help achieve broader objectives, whether in an enabling role, such as consulting firms, data and software developers, or in a user role.
17 organisations from eight European countries
The initiative involves a consortium of 17 organisations from eight European countries: four research centres, two universities, three consultancy firms, three associations and five companies. The Basque participation is headed by Ternua Group, Aclima and TECNALIA.
