"TECNALIA carries out the qualification process for four types of current and voltage transformers for the nuclear industry”

Tests on instrument transformers for the French nuclear industry

TECNALIA carries out qualification tests on instrument transformers in its electrical laboratory to ensure compliance with the safety requirements of the nuclear sector.

With up to 70% of its annual electricity production coming from nuclear power, France is the country with the world’s highest percentage of nuclear in its energy mix. This, combined with the high safety requirements of the industry, means that the French market has a high demand for reliable and resilient electrical equipment.

TECNALIA has carried out the qualification process for four types of current and voltage transformers for the nuclear sector

The qualification process, led by a large French group, involved innovative test sequences specifically designed to verify the correct operation of the transformers even in the most adverse situations.

The process involved electrical and vibration tests. TECNALIA has carried out dielectric tests, precision tests on instrument transformers and short-circuit tests, among other electrical tests. VIRLAB is also collaborating on the execution of vibration tests.

Instrument transformers measure the electrical parameters of nuclear power plants and are therefore essential elements in their safety systems. Overall, the test sequences carried out have enabled the verification of the capability of the transformers tested to operate correctly in adverse situations, where their use is most critical.
