“The extension of one of TECNALIA’s buildings incorporates the use of steel aggregates in its concrete foundations, in line with European green taxonomy criteria and regional regulations”

TECNALIA applies its own innovative developments in the decarbonisation of its buildings, including the use of steel aggregates in concrete

Net-zero direct emissions by 2024 and neutrality across the supply chain by 2030 has helped our Decarbonisation Strategy and Plan to focus on improving energy efficiency, smart use of resources and implementing sustainable solutions. This involves everything from processes and services, infrastructure and facilities, and requires the commitment of teams and suppliers, among others.

TECNALIA’s infrastructure plays an important role in the decarbonisation of its activity. TECNALIA turns its buildings into Living Labs where it implements developments and monitors the performance of these solutions in real service conditions.

What solutions have we implemented?

The extension of the Mikeletegi 7 building, located in Donostia/San Sebastián, is a good example of a smart use of resources, more efficient renewable generation systems and high energy efficiency standards. It also includes digital solutions for smart energy management, operation and maintenance.

The work, which began in March 2023, incorporates the use of steel aggregates in the concrete for its foundations, in line with European green taxonomy criteria (use of more than 30% of recycled raw materials) and regional regulations, as well as the thermal activation of the basement walls.

TECNALIA has wide experience in this sense, as 15 years ago it used innovative foundations for the experimental KUBIK building, offering good performance and maintenance results all these years.

Steel aggregate, a sustainable alternative for the construction industry

Properly processed steel aggregate is an effective alternative to conventional quarry aggregate for certain construction projects, contributing to the sustainable use of natural resources and to the circular economy of industrial by-products.

  • On 5 February, TECNALIA will be taking part in the monographic conference on steel aggregates organised by Grupo Campezo and GZS.
  • The event will be attended by experts from different fields to present the legal framework of this material in the Basque Country, its production, characteristics, applications and trends, as well as various success stories in construction.
